Last week was my first week attending Language Teaching Methodology course. This course would focus on the methodologies and strategies in teaching language. I was quite interested because as a teacher candidate I must know how to apply the appropriate method or strategy in teaching language, in this case is English.
My lecturer said that there was not the perfect method for teaching language. There is always limitation for every method and it would be better to fill the limitation with another method. In other words, we could combine one method with another one. Her words made me realize that as teacher we should know the best method in teaching language, but the more important is we do our best as teacher in teaching the language.
Nowadays my lecturer says teaching is obsolete. What does it mean? You know, for many years ago teachers teach the student. They give them every knowledge that they think it is necessary for them. They let the student know by giving them the information and ask them to memorize it then get good score in examination. That was the same with what I have experienced when I went to school. My teachers spoke a lot about the material and they often asked us to write it down. The teaching and learning activities was so boring then I did not listen to him or her. Then, I just memorized the materials to face the examination only so I could get good score. I think that way of teaching was not effective.
I have realized it is not about score anymore. We should do some changes. I was really touched when I read Kahlil Gibran about teacher. It says about teacher who walks among his followers. I believe that teacher’s role is not only teaching anymore but also lead the students to be able to arrive at the place they want. Then help them to achieve the glory.
I hope after I finish joining this course I will be able to be a good teacher who knows my students’ need and what is the best way in leading and helping them in making them be a better person.
